3 Reasons Why Every Musician Should Attend a Synckeepers Event

Dec 11, 2019

Every year Cathy Heller, founder of Catch the Moon Music, hosts one of the biggest sync events in Los Angeles, California. It always sells out & it never disappoints. This two-day event has attracted people from all over the world including Australia and Bali!

So, why should musicians attend a Synckeepers event? There are millions of reasons but here are our top 3!

Meet Big Time Music Supervisors and Producers

The Synckeepers event is where the industry’s top music supervisors and music producers come together and answer your questions, LIVE. The panels are set up Q&A style to answer as many questions from the audience as possible. You can ask anything you’d like and our very own Cathy Heller facilitates it.

Before, during, and after the event each day, you can personally meet the panelists. That is your chance to get your name in front of them, ask for their email, or simply soak in all the knowledge.

Training Your Ears 👂🏽

Jun 18, 2019
Training your ears.

Let's talk about training your ears. (Sorry for the duplicate video, the one I posted a few mins ago had some weird stuttering things happening.)

Posted by Catch The Moon Music on Tuesday, June 18, 2019

Let's talk about training your ears.

I gained some excellent advice from mixing engineer awhile back. He has worked with some huge artists like Prince, Matchbox Twenty, Def Leppard, Tom Petty, and  Rush. He said he gets asked all the time, "How did you learn to hear that?" His answer, "I had to teach myself to do this, nobody is born with tools to understand a mix. You have to learn."

Know Who You're Pitching To

When you are pitching your music, you need to know what your client is looking for. That client is trying to satisfy someone else's needs, and they have to present things that are on brand. Research to figure out what is needed and what they are looking for before tossing EPs their way.

The next step is figuring out...

The Top 5 Lyrical Themes That Pretty Much Any Ad, TV Show, or Film Needs (and will pay you for!)

Let's talk about lyrical themes that are constantly sought out for film, tv ads, etc.

Posted by Catch The Moon Music on Tuesday, May 21, 2019

So, I want to let you in on a little secret...

Songs with certain lyrical themes are requested constantly by music supervisors in the film, tv, and ad world.

Remember a couple weeks ago we talked about how possible it is to make good money getting songs licensed into film and ads? If that’s something you’re interested in then you’d better know what types of songs and sounds are in demand.

Today we are going to address lyrical themes that are often sought after. Now we are going to just address 5 of them, but there are many others you’ll come across. But this should at least really get your wheels turning.

In my opinion, the reason most artists fail at making a living with their music is because they're ignoring one or more of these three areas.

Let me spend a couple minutes breaking it down for you so you don’t fall into this same trap. You can’t neglect any of these three areas or your career in music will significantly suffer.

Education

Like it or not, knowledge is power. We can never stop learning. And as musicians and artists we HAVE to be well versed in our area of focus. This can drive how we write our music, the lyrics we use, the sounds we chase after, the messages we sing about,...

5 Big Myths

5 Big Myths About Making Money As An Artist

Let's talk about the 5 Big Myths about making money as an artist or musician. You know the lies that we're all told by our parents, friend, teachers, and neighbors.

(start at 0:53 to save time)

Ok, let’s talk about the 5 Big Myths about making money in music. These are myths that we continually debunk over at Catch the Moon Music.

Myth #1: You have to be famous or have a huge following to make money in music.

Not true! Yes, a big following can help you for streams, sales, merchandise and concerts. But there’s other great ways of making money in music also.

Ever hear of music licensing? That’s what we teach our students in our 6 Figure Songwriting class. It’s where you license your song to a TV show, movie, or advertisement, and get PAID to for it. When you know how to make music that works well for licensing you end up boosting your...

"Just a few years ago I was forced to almost give up my dream in music. I was miserable, answering phones at a real estate company and having to wear pants suits every day."

Hi. My name is Cathy Heller.

I want to tell you a quick story about what I went through.

If you’re a little bit frustrated, wondering if it’s even possible to make money in music, I first want you to know that you’re not alone. And I want you to know that I see you. I get you. I understand what it’s like to be an artist.

3 Reasons You're Not Making Money with Your Music

Apr 24, 2019

The Big 3.

The first time I told my cousin that I wanted to make a living working full time in the music industry he told me, "just don't quit your day job!"

At the time I was an engineer, with a steady high paying job. But I was miserable and I wanted out.

I knew I had this gift for making music, but I didn't know what or how to use it to make money. So began my journey toward doing what I loved...

I hear this same sentiment a lot from other artists, asking "is there any way I can make a living with my music?"

Over the years I've come to understand that it's usually a culmination of one or more of these three reasons.

Here's how I would break it down:1. You're in the wrong circles

It seems almost silly to say, but "who you know" makes all the difference in the world.

And it's not just about getting to know that famous record producer that happens to be sitting in the audience at one of your shows. It's actually more about the...

Simple is Better.

Apr 10, 2019

A clean desktop.

An easy tutorial.

An organized closet.

Face it. We LOVE when things are simple.

But when it comes to writing a hook or a chorus, we often do just the opposite, don't we?!  It's like we have to fill up every space and moment with more words and illustrations to drive home our point.

I think most of us know in our hearts that a simple message is often better!

So why aren't we writing more songs like this??

Because simple is often times more difficult.

Steve Jobs said it best, "Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains."

Mic drop.

So..., we have this thing we do over at CTM called our "Monday Music Breakdown," where we reverse engineer songs that are working for ads/film/etc. You can click HERE to see our latest one.

And this week we took a look at a Belk commercial, featuring a fun,...
